The Marlborough Public Schools (MPS) Music Association is a totally non-profit organization formed specifically to support all music students in the Marlborough School system (MHS, Whitcomb, and Richer, Kane, Goodnow and Jaworek Elementary schools) with an emphasis on the higher grades. The members include the parent(s)/guardians(s) of the music students, the students themselves, the music teachers & community members.
The organization provides revenue that enables the Association to present annual scholarships to graduating seniors who will be continuing their education in the music field, provide various student functions throughout the year (i.e., an awards banquet in the spring at the high school level - various pizza and end of year parties at the middle & intermediate school level), support student programs and activities and help send the students to cultural performances and on performing trips which includes some competitive performances.
In addition, the Association works with the Music Department Coordinator and music teachers to provide assistance in acquiring items not funded in the school’s budget, provide chaperones necessary on buses, parades and cultural activities and provides extra services to help concerts run efficiently.
Volunteers are the backbone of the organization. The association has several annual major fund raising events that require many volunteers to give one or two hours out of their busy schedule. The events include holiday gift wrapping at the Solomon Pond Mall, coat check and various concessions. With the efforts of our volunteers over the years, we have been able to provide thousands of dollars to the music program purchasing many items such as a new instrument storage system, new sound equipment, acoustical panels, supplemental and new performance dress for concerts & competitions and help repair various instruments to name just a few items.
The Association was founded in 1945 and originally formed as the Marlborough High School Band Association. In 1992 the organization expanded to include the vocal and dance groups as well as the instrumental and changed from supporting just the high school groups to supporting lower grades as well.
We would love to have you join us at our monthly general meetings so we can share ideas. Meetings are generally held the 1st Monday of each month September through June. The meetings are held at Marlborough High School’s Chorus Room at 7:00 p.m. and last about an hour. Feel free to give us a call anytime if you have any questions, comments or would like to volunteer some of your time. Thank you.
